A little Bacchanalia update.

I’ve made the difficult decision to take Summer Maiden: Persephone’s Fall out of active publication for now.

I wrote the original novella more than ten years ago as a short erotic retelling. I’m still grateful for the story it began, and especially for every reader who found it, read it, reviewed it, and helped bring me back to this world.

But Bacchanalia has changed since then. And boy howdy, so have I.

Writing Bound Maiden, and now Dream Maiden, has shown me what I want these books to be: full-length dark mythic romances with room for the characters, relationships, mythology, and questions of power and surrender to fully develop.

The current Summer Maiden no longer feels like the complete Persephone story I want to tell, or like the right introduction to what Bacchanalia has become.

So I’m going to rewrite it.

First, though, Psyche gets her ending. I’m finishing Dream Maiden: Psyche’s Surrender before I return to Persephone and Aidon.

When Summer Maiden comes back, it will be a substantially expanded and reimagined novel, positioned as a prequel to the Bacchanalia books.

And in the meantime: you do not need to have read Summer Maiden to read Bound Maiden. Daphne and Apollo’s story stands on its own.

Thank you for being patient with me while these books become what I think they were meant to be.

— Eva

I'm SO excited to share that BOUND MAIDEN: DAPHNE'S CHASE was released Monday!
It is a strange and wonderful feeling to finally have my Daphne and Apollo out in the world after spending so much time with them.

I especially want to thank all of the ARC readers who took a chance on the book, read it early, and shared their thoughts. Seeing readers understand Daphne and her fierceness has meant more to me than I can say. Plus, a lot of you seem to share my weakness for Apollo's obnoxious charms.
I've been particularly delighted by how many of you seem to have developed a soft spot for Eros... which is very fortunate, because I'm spending quite a lot of time with him now. And boy is he a sexy mess. =)

I fell for Eros while I was writing BOUND MAIDEN, but giving him his own D/s story has been a revelation. The composed, analytical, but deeply passionate Psyche is proving to be exactly the woman he needs, and the woman he was least prepared for, poor guy.

DREAM MAIDEN: PSYCHE'S SURRENDER is actually now a little over 63,000 words, and it's looking as though the finished book will land somewhere around 350 pages. I'm aiming for a FEB 14 launch date because... Cupid.

I'm so excited about it.

One other note for readers who are curious about BOUND MAIDEN but haven't read SUMMER MAIDEN: You absolutely do not need to start with Book 1.

(In a way I'd prefer you didn't.)

The Bacchanalia books exist in the same world and the characters occasionally cross paths, but each romance stands on its own.

SUMMER MAIDEN was originally written as an erotic novella rather than a full-length dark romance, and it is a rather different creature from BOUND MAIDEN. Someday, I'd like to return to Persephone and Aidon and expand their story, giving it more room to become the book I now think it could be.
But Daphne's story is very much its own beginning.

For now, I'm simply enormously grateful that she's finally out in the world, and very grateful to everyone who helped send her there — and you if you're reading this.

And now, I'm off back to Psyche and Eros. They've just gotten themselves into a lot of trouble.
In the (first draft) words of Apollo: "You two seem to have cocked this up spectacularly."

— Eva

Blog post.

One of my favourite parts of writing mythological retellings is discovering that the myths still have secrets left to tell.

When I started Dream Maiden, I thought I knew what Psyche's story was about: Beauty, trust and love. (How could it not be about love!?) Those things are certainly there, but as I advance in this draft, I am realizing they are only a part of the heart of the novel.
Instead, the book has become about seeing. And what it means to truly see someone and be seen.

Psyche is the most beautiful woman in Greece. Everyone looks at her. Kings, priests, strangers, even the gods. She's admired, desired, envied and worshipped... yet no one really sees her.

As she herself says on page one: "The poets will tell you beauty is truth. It’s not. Beauty is madness. It’s what men see instead of truth."

Eros also hides himself from the world. If you met him in BOUND MAIDEN, you know he lives alone in his high aerie, and he struggles with the guilt from the pain that love creates. In that book, he says: "This is my office. Every arrow creates a debt. We gods may pretend otherwise, but it is mortals who pay the cost. If love is not pain now, it is pain and grief in the end. Every love affair ends in heartbreak or death."

So I somehow am writing a love story between a woman who has never been known and a man who doesn't want to be known. I didn't really plan that – it has simply emerged as the story is unfolding. And I'm so excited to see how it is playing out.

One of the joys of writing a trilogy is watching each book find its own voice. Summer Maiden asked what happens when love demands surrender. Bound Maiden explored the demands love makes on freedom, identity, and choosing your own path.
Dream Maiden is already becoming the most intimate, and perhaps the most psychological of the three. (Though there will be cameos from all the other MMCs and FMCs.)

It also already contains some of my favourite scenes I've ever written.
So the manuscript is now well into its second half, and every time I think I know where these characters are going, they grab the reins. It's the best part of writing.
I'm looking forward to sharing Psyche and Eros with you.

Blog post.

I’m now accepting ARC readers for BOUND MAIDEN: DAPHNE's CHASE , my dark erotic retelling of the myth of Daphne and Apollo.

The book releases on September 1, and I’m looking for readers who genuinely enjoy spicy, dark myth retellings, erotic romance, morally complicated gods, strong heroines, bondage, power exchange, and who embrace the complicated choices between desire and surrender.

The digital ARC is available on:

NetGalley

BookSirens

BookSprout

There are also a small number of physical ARC's available. Contact me for information.

To request an ARC directly:

Just send me a email telling me a little about why you’d like to be an ARC reader.
Please include:

your email address if you would like a digital copy

your mailing address if you would like a printed copy

your preference

where you usually review books, such as Goodreads, Amazon, BookBub, B&N, Instagram, or elsewhere

There is no requirement to leave a positive review. I am only asking for an honest one.
Because printed copies are limited, I may not be able to send one to everyone who requests one, but I’ll do my best to match the book with readers who seem like a good fit.

A little about the story:
Daphne has vowed her chastity to Artemis. She wants no husband and no love that might bind her. Then Apollo catches her in his golden rope.
What begins as humiliation and fury awakens a hunger in her she never knew she carried, and forces both Daphne and Apollo to confront the difference between claiming someone and being chosen by them.

BOUND MAIDEN: DAPHNE'S CHASE includes enemies-to-lovers tension, lively banter, bondage, and also triggers like power imbalance, dark kink, violence, humiliation, blood and injury, and explicit sexual content.

If that sounds like your kind of story, send me a message.

I would love to hear from you. Thank you!

Blog post.

I’m delighted to share that BOUND MAIDEN: DAPHNE'S CHASE is finally finished and officially scheduled for release on September 1.

This is the second standalone story in my Bacchanalia cycle, following SUMMER MAIDEN: PERSEPHONE'S FALL. This time, I’m turning to the myth of Daphne and Apollo. (Who you might remember from SUMMER MAIDEN.)

In the story most of us have read, Apollo is struck by Cupid's arrow and desires Daphne, but she runs from him, and in an attempt to preserve her chastity, she is transformed into a laurel tree before he can claim her.

I have never found that story very satisfying.

And like Persephone, there is an exquisite sculpture of Daphne and Apollo by Bernini - in the Borghese Gallery. (The leaves of her fingers are so thin you can see the light through the marble.) I didn't need much more inspiration.

The story of Daphne leads itself perfectly to the Bondage and Dominance aspect of BDSM, and I knew Daphne's story of being bound in the laurel tree would be improved just as a story of being bound. Of freedom and choice and love.

I asked: What did Daphne want before the chase began? What did freedom mean to a woman who had devoted herself to Artemis, rejected marriage, and built her identity around remaining untouched? And what might happen if the god pursuing her discovered that desire, surrender, and possession were not nearly as simple as even he believed he was?

The result is BOUND MAIDEN: DAPHNE'S CHASE.

It has banter, enemies-to-lovers tension, bondage, power exchange, divine punishment, mythic violence, and a heroine who refuses to let anyone else define what freedom should look like for her. It's a little lighter in tone than SUMMER MAIDEN, but just as edgy.

At its heart, though, it is a story about choice. About the difference between being conquered and choosing to surrender.

About a woman discovering that strength does not always mean refusing to yield.

And about a god who begins the story thinking love is an amusement and ends it understanding what it means to stand between the woman he loves and the thing that would destroy her.

I’m enormously excited to finally share this version of Daphne’s story.

BOUND MAIDEN: DAPHNE'S CHASE releases September 1.
